InfoComm 2019 Show Review

27 June 2019 - When InfoComm, North America’s largest pro-AV industry event, opened its doors in June, Futuresource Consulting’s research analysts were on hand to explore the key innovations, topics and trends. The team spent more than 100 combined hours evaluating projection, flat panel, video wall, LED, signal distribution, collaboration, video conferencing, wireless presentation and professional audio segments.

The expert insights are now being made available in a free 27-page show report, available for download from the Futuresource website or via the link here>>. With 1,000 exhibitors, thousands of products and 44,000 attendees from 110 countries, here’s a preview of some of the information that can be found in the report.

Spotlight on Front Projection

Modular remote light source projection was a key talking point at the show. With the launch of Digital Projection’s Satellite Modular Laser System (Satellite MLS) and the InfoComm debut of Christie’s Mirage SST, such solutions could be the future for complex multi-channel applications. This includes domes, caves and simulators, as well as open environments where space or noise constraints have previously been a barrier.

Projection onto transparent screens and glass was also prevalent across the show, with Maxell (formerly Hitachi), NEC and DNP just some of the brands demonstrating this solution. The concept was targeted at retail and corporate environments alike and provides further evidence of how innovations in projection are opening up new applications and markets.

Flat Panel Trending Upwards

One of the key trends and talking points from InfoComm was the shift towards collaboration and the corporate segment, with most vendors showing collaboration solutions on their booths. Some vendors focused completely on corporate, with no signage products on display at all.

For the first time in recent years, the LCD video wall segment saw new product launches at InfoComm, with 65” offerings from Christie and Planar. This is a key development, as end users explore ways to increase the size of the total wall, without requiring an increasing number of panels.

Signal Distribution on the Rise

2019 was another exceptional year for the AV over IP market, with a growing focus on the benefits of IP solutions evident across the show floor. With more manufacturers bringing products to market and major vendors demonstrating the flexibility that IP can offer, InfoComm 2019 was the biggest year yet for the AV over IP industry.

While this market has enjoyed strong growth over the past 24 months, it has also seen disruptions and difficulties for some vendors. Despite its rapid ascendance, widescale adoption has yet to develop. However, the show was a fine example of how far the market has progressed over the last few years.

Collaboration is Key

As technological advancements continue to allow significant changes to the world of work, the market for collaboration technologies in corporate and education verticals is on the rise. Video conferencing and wireless presentation systems are enjoying high growth rates and continued success. The opportunity was apparent at InfoComm, with significant floor space dedicated to solutions, which were receiving widespread attention.

Audio Rising

InfoComm 2019 was as popular as ever with live sound systems vendors. Houses of worship, theatres, performing arts and stadia have all been long-standing opportunities for sound reinforcement. More recently at the show, hospitality and cruise lines have come into focus as key applications.

Several completely new product releases were showcased, with L-Acoustics being one of the most notable, introducing yet more products at InfoComm following the release of its smallest ever speaker at ISE earlier in the year. Aimed at houses of worship and other install applications, its A series of install speakers demonstrate the brand’s ambition to generate more business in the worship sector, by far the most lucrative installed live sound market in the US.
