Video Entertainment Market Spend Hitting Record Levels after a Turbulent 2020

Futuresource Consulting’s latest update on the Dutch video entertainment market highlights a positive overall trend in the sector. Consumer spend in the overall video entertainment market in the Netherlands was set to post record levels in 2021, reaching €2.6bn and is forecast to hit €3bn in 2022 and reach €3.2bn by 2025 - growing at 5% ‘21-’25 CAGR.  

SVoD Leads the Way  

SVoD is well established in the Netherlands. Futuresource analysts expect to see this market generate nearly €700m in consumer spend in 2021, up 38% year-on-year. SVoD continues to expand and diversify with new platforms such as HBO Max and Sky Showtime (featuring Paramount content) expected to launch in 2022 and is expected to drive at least one third of total video entertainment spend by 2025.  

Will Pay-TV Hold Strong?  

The Netherlands has a relatively robust Pay-TV markets, which was set to generate €1.7bn in 2021 remaining flat during the forecast period, despite the growing interest and shift towards OTT alternatives. With this in mind, key leading Pay-TV providers such as VodafoneZiggo are expected to expand their partnerships with SVoD service providers.

Box Office Set to Rebound  

Performance at Box Office in 2021 proved to be challenging, however, Morris Garrard, Media & Entertainment Analyst at Futuresource Consulting, provides some reason for encouragement despite an increasingly complex movie distribution environment.

 “We predict a strong recovery for the box office in the forecast period, with our research indicating that it’s set to generate €285m by 2025 - four times larger than the transactional video sector.”
