Gaming software market levels up with global growth of 11% in 2025
The global video games software market has switched to growth mode, with Futuresource Consulting’s latest industry report projecting an 11% rise in 2025, lifting total software revenues to $186 billion. The expansion follows a solid 4.5% increase in 2024, driven by mobile gaming, new console launches, and a structural shift towards digital content and subscription models.
“The games market is finding a new equilibrium, balanced between accessibility, engagement and monetisation,” says Nikolaos Tzoumerkas, Lead Analyst at Futuresource Consulting. “Mobile continues to capture hearts and wallets, while gaming software finds further success in subscription ecosystems, influencer culture and esports which have started redefining what commercial success looks like across all platforms.”
Mobile gaming at the forefront
Mobile remains the most profitable segment in gaming software, benefitting from its huge installed base and low entry barriers. Prize pools for mobile esports now reach multi-million-dollar figures, with sponsorship deals attracting major brands and global celebrities.
Futuresource notes that the average revenue per mobile gamer has risen to $16.60, and is expected to reach $19.40 by 2029, signposting the long-term value of the sector.
Console ecosystems evolve
Console gaming is experiencing a continued shift from one-time sales to recurring revenues. Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are all prioritising subscription-driven ecosystems that deepen engagement and extend game lifecycles.
PlayStation Plus is expected to reach 54.3 million subscribers by the end of 2025, up from 52.1 million in 2024. Meanwhile, Nintendo’s Switch 2 launch has reinvigorated the brand. In 2025, the retail value of Nintendo’s digital games is forecast to reach $7.6 billion, while physical sales hit $5.7 billion. Xbox continues to lean into Game Pass and cross-platform releases, evolving into a service-first ecosystem with recurring DLC revenues on track to top $6 billion by 2029.
PC gaming keeps on ticking
PC software remains the second-largest segment, forecast to exceed $60 billion by 2029, with downloadable content and subscriptions together accounting for more than 70% of total PC software value. The continued popularity of survival-crafting titles and live-service games is extending playing time and boosting long-term monetisation.
Subscriptions reshape the market
Recurring payment models are redefining how games are consumed and funded. This new Futuresource report identifies subscriptions as one of the strongest engines for predictable growth, combining access to large libraries with constant updates, in-game events and exclusive content. For consumers, this approach lowers upfront costs, and for publishers it boosts engagement and retention.
“Gaming hardware launches grab the headlines, but the real heartbeat here is digital,” says Tzoumerkas. “Mobile, subscriptions and live-service models are keeping players engaged long after launch day. It’s this continuous cycle of play, connect and return that builds sustainable business models long after a console or a game is released.”
