This report provides market sizing data and analysis on mobile computing devices within the compulsory education sector). Sales into higher education and distance learning are not included. Devices covered in this report are notebooks, Chromebooks, netbooks and tablets. Desktop PCs are not included.
The global K-12 mobile PC market contracted further during the fourth quarter of 2023, as a result of softer than usual demand in the traditional “quiet season” in North America and Europe, coupled with a muted pre-academic year procurement period in APAC and Latin America.
The market faces a number of challenges e.g. there is continued uncertainty regarding the availability of sufficient funding to greenlight projects in many markets. There are concerns on how the refresh will be funded and schools and districts are looking at how they might extend device lifespans to mitigate funding shortages for as long as possible. The question of whether learning outcomes improve because of the use of PC technology, is being increasingly asked following the recent UNESCO report and is resulting in education authorities debating the need to refresh their device fleets or even push towards a digital transformation. In addition, AI both in terms of cloud-based services and embedded in devices is increasingly at the forefront of discussions and while it may have a positive impact on teacher workload the implementation of AI is also a further competitor for already limited budgets and may also inadvertently lead to a widening of the equity gap.
