It’s game on for gaming audio growth, as streamers set the tone
New Futuresource report explores how content creators and connectivity are reshaping demand for gaming audio.
The global gaming audio market returned to growth in 2024, with volume rising by 5.4% to achieve 40.9 million units, according to Futuresource Consulting’s latest industry report. Following two years of decline, this rebound marks the beginning of a new growth phase, with shipments projected to exceed 54 million units by 2029.
Headsets remain the dominant force in the category, and despite a 2% uplift for gaming speakers in 2024, they continue to occupy a much smaller niche when compared with headsets. Consumers remain focused on the immersive and multiplayer features that headsets provide, especially as online competition and team-based gameplay become more mainstream.
From esports teams to influencer streams
One of the most striking changes in the gaming landscape is a move away from traditional esports teams toward individual streamers and content creators.
“These personalities now command loyal audiences that often emulate their setups, including the headsets and audio gear they use,” says Nikolaos Tzoumerkas, Lead Analyst at Futuresource Consulting.
“Brands have responded by forming deeper partnerships with high-profile influencers, making streaming personalities key marketing assets. Their reach and relatability are proving more persuasive than conventional brand campaigns, especially among younger gamers and those looking for value-based gear recommendations.”
Emerging markets provide long-term lift
Moving forward, Futuresource expects the fastest growth to come from emerging regions, where better connectivity is opening up access to a new wave of online gamers. These markets, while still price-sensitive, are showing increasing interest in more feature-rich headsets, particularly those offering wireless connectivity and low-latency performance.
Despite this, entry-level headsets under $50 remain the largest volume segment, accounting for over 40% of global shipments in 2024. However, a slow shift is underway, with average selling prices (ASPs) rising by 4.7% last year, up from $60.5 to $63.4. Futuresource expects ASPs to peak in 2025 before stabilising and gradually declining through to 2029 as new technologies become cheaper to implement.
Looking out towards an audio-rich future
“The global gaming audio market is settling into a new sweet spot,” says Tzoumerkas, “and we expect the next few years to bring even more rewards. The market will be driven by major console cycles, blockbuster game releases like GTA 6, and growing demand for premium features. We’re talking spatial audio, wireless connectivity and detachable microphones.
“Content creation, emerging regions and technical innovation are all aligning to drive both volume and value. Those brands that can balance price, performance and personality-led marketing are the ones that are well-positioned for success.”
