US teachers point to a blend of factors behind improved learning outcomes

US teachers have highlighted a combination of factors as key to supporting learning outcomes, according to Futuresource Consulting’s latest study. Drawing on responses from 412 teachers, department heads and curriculum leads, Futuresource's EdTech Voice USA – Learning Outcomes Teacher Survey emphasises the growing importance of technology-enabled teaching approaches, with educators pointing to engagement as a key driver of student success.

“While active learning supported by mobile PCs is regarded as the biggest indicator of improved learning, it’s also clear that no single factor works in isolation,” says Natalie Tapera, Lead Analyst, Futuresource Consulting. “Teacher training and the learning environment all contribute to effective outcomes.”

Technology enhances pedagogy

Over 90% of respondents incorporate active learning strategies, and nearly 60% use them more frequently than any other instructional approach. When supported by mobile PCs, teachers agreed it delivered the greatest gains in learning outcomes.

“It shows the continued importance of both effective pedagogical choices and the value of technology integration,” notes Tapera.

Software tool usage increases, though training still relatively low

The survey shows a clear shift in usage frequency for software tools. While LMS/SIS platforms and productivity suites remain the most widely used, there has been a marked increase in teachers recognising the value of classroom response tools.

Nearly 45% report using these tools daily or several times a week, increasing from previous research waves. Despite the growing demand for solutions that support engagement, collaboration, and interactivity, training remains of critical importance.

The study showed a decline in the number of teachers without training across key software. While LMS training remains the most common, most teachers still receive only 1–5 hours of training across key software categories.

Balancing device usage with screen time

Over half of the teachers surveyed believe students could spend more time using devices, while simultaneously working to reduce passive screen time. This highlights a growing emphasis on purposeful technology use, where the focus is not simply on access to devices, but on how they are used to support learning.

Technology and learning viewed as complementary

“The message is clear. Teaching and technology often go hand in hand,” says Tapera. “Teachers have reported seeing improved learning outcomes through better engagement and personalisation. But proper training, instructional variety, and intention must be at its core.”

“Overall, it’s not about removing screens from the classroom, but ensuring devices are used with purpose to enhance learning and eliminate distractions.”
