The rise of hybrid working, combining remote work and in-person office-based work, presents challenges for organisations and employees alike. One of the key obstacles is the need to establish effective communication and collaboration channels that bridge the physical and virtual divide.
From an organisational perspective, maintaining team cohesion, productivity and fostering a specific culture can be more complex when individuals are located across multiple locations. Loyalty and long-term commitment to an organisation may be negatively impacted if employees do not feel fully immersed in the working culture and have opportunities to build close
working relationships with their colleagues. Junior employees must also be mentored and thought given to succession planning.
At the end of 2023, just under half of employees were fully office based (46%), 39% were hybrid workers and 15% were either fully remote or fully flexible. Among those working hybrid or remotely, (63%) felt that their employers would like them to spend more time in the office.
Most employees who work in offices are there because of company policy. However, 34% mentioned feeling more connected to co-workers when working from the office and 29% cited the greater opportunities for collaboration.
Having the ability to work from home, at least sometimes, when looking for a new job is viewed as important by the majority: 35% rated it as extremely important and 31% rated it as somewhat important. It was considered particularly important by senior employees and those in the 36-45 age bracket.
