This Futuresource media streaming report provides an updated outlook for the global digital media streamer market.
Futuresource classifies a media streamer as a standalone device that has the primary function of streaming video content to a display from an IP source. These devices are available in both box and dongle form factors.
The report reviews key developments, including media streaming companies' market share, and brand and country-level market segmentation. Forecasts are provided out to 2027. With analysis for key regions and 22 countries and a focus on key vendor profiles and pay-TV operator initiatives, the report acts as a strategic framework for any enterprise operating within the streaming media devices market or its adjacent sectors. Research for this report was conducted during Q1 2023.
The global media streaming market is dominated by the big four of Amazon, Google, Roku and Apple, with several smaller brands, including Nvidia and Xiaomi, vying for market share. After two years of accelerating consumer demand, in 2022 the streaming media market posted a decline of 0.2%, due to the weakening economic environment. Yet despite the short-term difficulties, Futuresource expects future growth potential, particularly in developing economies.
Developed markets continue to dominate the media streamer market in terms of volume share, but the product category has reached ownership saturation, resulting in demand decreasing as new adoption slows. In particular, the US media streamer market had 83% of households owning two or more streaming devices in 2022.
In Western Europe, Germany and UK were the leading media streamer markets in 2022 with sales well in excess of four million units in each country. In terms of household penetration, Denmark, Germany, Italy and UK are the leading markets.
Moving forward, the high rates of ownership, and competition from Smart TVs, is set to reduce demand for media streamers across Western Europe. This is pointing to some opportunities in Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and META regions, which currently have the lowest household penetration.
