Smart spending, smarter spaces: the new blueprint for higher education
Futuresource Consulting releases latest insights into higher education device and infrastructure trends across North America and Western Europe
New research from Futuresource Consulting reveals that universities across North America and Western Europe are undergoing major digital transformation. Many are redesigning their learning spaces, reevaluating device strategies and prioritising cyber security, all while working with tighter budgets.
The research firm’s latest Higher Education TAM Assessment and Decision Maker Survey, based on interviews with over 300 institutions, explores the evolving approach to EdTech investment. It uncovers new thinking around technology usage, how this is being reshaped to meet changing student needs, and how it aligns with the future of work.
“Universities are learning to adapt and evolution is underway,” says Iryna Kazanchuk, Senior Research Analyst at Futuresource Consulting. “We’re seeing them combine flexible learning environments with initiatives around student-led tech use and strategic investment planning. From collaborative study zones to esports arenas, from cyber security to AI, the new EdTech shift is already taking shape.”
Redesigned teaching spaces drive AV investment
The research shows that, across North America and Western Europe, institutions are shifting away from fixed desktop setups. The priority is BYOD-friendly spaces with better Wi-Fi, interactive displays and flexible collaboration tools. In North America, video conferencing tops the priority list, while Western Europe sees growing investment in interactive flat panels and makerspaces, which are collaborative workspaces designed for making, learning, exploring and sharing.
Cyber security, esports and AI move into the mainstream
With 65% of institutions in North America, and 71% in Western Europe, reporting recent cyberattacks, investments in security and smart campus strategies are accelerating. AI tools are also seeing widespread adoption, especially ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, supporting both teaching and learning.
In addition, over 80% of institutions now offer esports in some form, with standalone courses and competitive programmes on the rise.
Computing and AV lifecycles lengthen amid budget pressures
While many institutions are increasing their IT budgets slightly in 2025, spending remains under tight control. Notebooks and MacBooks are expected to see the most growth, while desktop PCs continue to lead in communal and admin spaces. AV equipment, such as projectors and flat panels, is increasingly replaced only upon failure, highlighting the need for longevity and warranty assurance.
The future is strategic, resilient and highly adaptable
As higher education wrestles with economic challenges and rising student expectations, institutions are increasingly leveraging the entire IT toolbox. Computing devices, AV equipment, services, platforms and much more, are all being aligned to give students the skills and knowledge to thrive in the evolving workplace.
“Our findings show a clear advancement in thinking,” says Kazanchuk. “We’re not just seeing spending shifts. We’re seeing long-term strategies being forged around smart campus investment, esports expansion and robust cyber security frameworks. The winners in this space will be those who align tech investments with real student needs, build for resilience, and recognise that institutions are now far more tech-savvy than they were just a few short years ago.”
