The total LED display market, including monochrome/tri-colour LED and LED video displays, witnessed slower than expected year-on-year improvement in 2023 but, based on H1 results, increasing growth in 2024 is expected. By 2028, Futuresource expects a global valuation of nearly $21 billion with a CAGR of 18.5% CAGR.
A significant Direct View LED technology transition is expected to reshape the Professional Display marketplace as well as Consumer Televisions. True MicroLED, also referred to as Chip on Glass (CoG), will be implemented as sub-100 micron chiplets mass transferred onto a TFT or glass backplane with active driver technology.
Conversely, MiniLED will be the Flip Chip variety of Chip on Board (CoB) and will be realised as 100 to 200 micron chiplets mass transferred directly onto printed circuit boards often combined with common cathode driver ICs to reduce power utilisation. Both package-less implementations, which leverage mass transfer versus pick-and-place, are expected to deliver significant cost savings compared to packaged variants Surface Mount Device (SMD) and Integrated Micro Device (IMD).
