Low power, high potential: E-paper signage enters the spotlight

As the professional display industry looks beyond traditional LCD and LED technologies, new research from Futuresource Consulting highlights the growing role of e-paper signage (EPD) as a complementary, energy-efficient alternative.

Futuresource’s latest E-paper Signage Displays Market Outlook report reveals a market still in its infancy, but one that is beginning to gain traction across retail, corporate and public environments.

Drawing on a combination of demand-side adoption analysis and supply-side market dynamics, the research explores how e-paper is carving out a distinct position within the wider display ecosystem.

“E-paper signage is not simply competing with traditional displays, it’s redefining where digital can deliver value,” said Morris Garrard, Senior Market Analyst at Futuresource Consulting. “Its strength lies in low-power, static and semi-dynamic use cases, where it can scale efficiently and support the transition away from analogue print. That’s where we see the real long-term opportunity.”

An emerging market with long-term potential

While adoption remains at an early stage, commercial deployments are now scaling. Global shipments reached 16.4K units in 2025, representing rapid year-on-year growth, albeit from a relatively small installed base.
The market is expected to remain characterised by project-led deployments, with longer sales cycles and fragmented demand shaping near-term performance. Despite this, the trajectory points towards steady expansion as use cases mature.

Positioned as a bridge between print and digital

A key theme within the report is the role of e-paper as a bridge between traditional print workflows and digital infrastructure.

Rather than acting as a direct substitute for high-refresh digital signage, EPD is enabling new applications where ultra-low power consumption, flexibility and sustainability are critical. This positions the technology to unlock incremental demand rather than displace existing display categories.

Retail leads adoption as vertical use cases expand

Retail continues to dominate early adoption, accounting for the majority of deployments as businesses look to digitise static signage and improve operational efficiency.
However, the opportunity is broadening across verticals including corporate environments, transportation, hospitality and education, particularly in applications aligned to static content and print replacement.

Adoption driven by sustainability and operational efficiency

Energy efficiency and ESG alignment are emerging as key drivers of demand. E-paper enables always-on display functionality with minimal power consumption, supporting sustainability mandates while reducing operational costs.

At the same time, advances in form factor, operating systems and CMS integration are improving the usability and scalability of deployments.

Building a scalable ecosystem

As the market develops, success will depend on ecosystem maturity. Supplier strategies, channel development and integration capabilities will play a critical role in accelerating adoption.
The report highlights the importance of aligning hardware innovation with software, connectivity and content management capabilities to unlock wider commercial deployment.

A complementary, not competing, technology

The overarching finding is clear: e-paper signage should be viewed as an enabling layer within the display landscape, not a replacement technology.
Its value lies in unlocking new use cases, extending digital reach and supporting the transition from analogue to connected environments.
